Do You Love This World?

$3,600.00

“and there it is again ---

beauty the brave, the exemplary,

blazing open.

Do you love this world?

Do you cherish your humble and silky life?

Do you adore the green grass, with its terror beneath?”

Excerpted from “Peonies” by Mary Oliver.

Most of what I could say here, about entropy, my fear of death (or more accurately, my fear of leaving work unfinished), my love and awe of nature, is better articulated by Oliver’s poem. My piece is an homage, although my decision to include a skull perhaps speaks to my own preoccupations. After all, flowers are their own memento mori.

This panel features a central image of a bird skull surrounded by peonies. The flowers’ centers are beaded with 24k gold plated beads, and the blossoms look as though they’re cupping pools of gold. Sharp eyed viewers will notice two tiny ants crawling over the skull, another homage to the poem. The dark green background is beaded using transparent beads, and the imagery almost seems to float above it.

This piece was created by first beading the 8” x 5” panel and then stitching it to the 12” x 9” canvas. The canvas has been equipped with d-rings and wire, gallery style, for ease of hanging.

This is a one of a kind work of art. Prints may be purchased here.
